Head Candy

An easy to tie fly; It’s so good, it even rhymes!
The surf candy is such an easy fly to tie…if you have some experience working with epoxy, which is the most challenging bit about it.
This head candy would be a great substitute for a hairclip. They catch all sorts of fish and can be used in quite a lot of conditions.

I restricted myself to materials that I would be able to source where ever I’m at. I took the fibers off of a party wig, These things are pretty easy to find, I found some in a shop that sells costumes, They were a bit pricey, but I know that I would be able to get a lot of material from each of them. Besides, I was looking for a material that was pretty straight and very thin.
So pretty much, this fly is nothing but mono filament nylon except for the eyes and the epoxy.
What I like about this fly is that it’s very fast to tie and it’s very easy to cast. I bet I could cast this even with my 5 weight fly rod!
This is really nothing but a surf candy, this fly is legend. The surf candy was made my Bob Popovics. He is the father of epoxy flies I believe, although I could be wrong.
The surf candy is at home in flats, bluewater and anywhere in between, the surf candy is truly a versatile fly.
Surf Candies have been used all over the world to catch all sorts of fish, from tuna to flats fish like GT, the surf candy is a fly in it’s own class and this fly just keeps them coming back for more.
Since I made this from wig “hair”, I will call this the Head Candy. It’s really nothing more than a surf candy tied with different materials right?
The head candy will be tested out this coming fishing season and I’m sure the head candy will be turning a few tails.
The video in this post will show you how I made the head candy. It’s a bit lengthy since I explain what materials I used to put it together…seriously, there’s nothing special about the head candy.
I’ll make a few predictions; the head candy will be mobbed by the queenfish, but then again, so would any surf candy clone.
Sometime soon, I will laugh about the head candy…I’ll first test it out on dorado when I get the chance. But who knows really, it might just snag a tuna.
love the results.
Anyway, check out the video, there’s really nothing to it.
Also run a search on youtube on how Bob makes his. I believe the Surf Candy is still evolving and there’s always a new way of tying it.
