Flies, Flies…FLIES!!!!
When I first started fishing, I thought fly fishing was magic. I didn’t really understand much of it. 20 odd years later, I still have a very basic understanding of it and am discovering what wonderful things fly fishing has for someone like me.
Like any type of fishing, fly fishing is something that you need to embrace to understand; people who dedicate their lives to fly fishing and or fly tying will only grasp the “tip of the iceberg” in their twilight years.
The “lure” (pardon the pun) of catching a fish with something you made with your bare hands is very primal to us human beings. Fly fishing gives you that…and more.
I discovered tying flies before fly fishing; for me, it was more on the tool that lures the fish, rather than the fishing method…so for years, I let my fly rod and reel sit in the corner gathering dust. I did have at least the decency to learn how to cast, albeit not super effective, but enough to get a few feet between myself and the fly.
As the years passed, I discovered other fishing methods and fly fishing and fly tying were left in a corner. I discovered that dusty corner and resurrected both, not because I felt the urge, it was more utilitarian than anything else, I wanted to fish while in one of my travels abroad from Dubai. My wife Lovely and I were to spend a few days in Thailand. As per our standard agreement, I can fish for part of the trip. This is when the genius of fly fishing kicked in; Fly rods have been manufactured with the traveling angler in mind. Fly fishing is a gift from heaven for the traveling angler! High quality fly rods have been around for some time and most of them are made having 4 sections or more!..What a coincidence it was when I discovered that I just happen to have a Temple Fork Outfitters’ TiCrX rod as well as an Okuma Fly Reel spooled with backing and fly line lying around (Yeah…right!
)
To make a long story short, that particular trip was a blast.
Below are some of the flies in my collection; one of them caught the milkfish I have on the video, which Leng Chua, a good friend and fishing buddy, have dubbed “Al Gay fly”
I’ll write something about the fly soon.
