DNA Whistler

// November 20th, 2011 // Comments Off // Angles, Videos

This is one of the first flies I tied when I was a kid. It is that easy to tie.

It hits the two categories in fly tying that I love, easy to tie and effective.

In this variant, I tie in DNA as the tail instead of the traditional bucktail. I also opted not to put the barred hackle wings, instead, I used a marker to make barrings on the tail.

The key to this fly are the barrings to make the tail look like it’s moving. The hackle collar is also very important, unlike most patterns that calls for you to strip the marabou like fibers off, you want them on to give you as much action as possible. The chenille body helps sinks the fly.

The name “whistler” comes from casting one of these. They make a whistling sound because of the bead chain.
