Cyanide and Blast Fishing Consequences

// July 21st, 2011 // Comments Off // Angles, Rants

A friend and fishing buddy of mine, Scott Countryman went to Palawan last weekend and went diving and took these images.

Scott, who is American and a Philippine resident, a foreigner in our land by birth; cares more about the state of our reef systems more than a lot of Filipinos.

If most of us had half  the heart that Scott has, we would have not allowed this to happen.

The few people that have done something to keep these sort of things from happening, they end up dead. The reality is, if you want to do something right in our country, you get a huge target mark on your back. Why?

It’s really a sad case and a frustrating one at that. Being someone living away from home, I can see how different it is elsewhere. I get jealous when I visit other countries that stick to legal methods to catch their fish. If we took care of what we have, we would have more than what these countries have.

We complain about poverty, but if we keep these places pristine, tourism, which Dubai is living off of, would be a larger draw than it is for our country now.

What I know is that The Philippines have a very stiff punishment on these illegal methods. So far, I have not heard on the news of anyone getting heavily punished.

This is a crime that should not go unnoticed and unpunished. When will this stop?
